Representation

The Expendables 3

1) There are a majority of the cast being presented as male as this film is in the action genre and in most action films there would be male cast. As well as that, the characters also look to survive impossible stunts which could enforce the representation of men acting as risk takers compared to women. The nationality of most of the heroes in this are presented as white and some black characters giving some diversity in the team. There are some features of women scene in the trailer however they don't have as much screen time as their male counterparts.

2) For a majority of the scenes with the males, this is shown with a dominant portrayal due to the circumstances that face. For instance the weapons that they use which act as action codes like the minigun being fired. Also there is an alternate portrayal of women in the trailer. In a typical perspective women are seen as a damsel of distress. But in the scene with the club, we see the female character go in hand-to-hand combat against an attacker which goes against the portrayal of women being seen as weak and seeking help in fights. Also the antagonist appears to be American rather than the stereotyped foreign villain that would normally be seen in action films.

3) The stereotypes present in this trailer involve the men being presented as masculine due to the action sets that were shown in the trailer. There were also stereotypes of men generally taking risks with the incident where one of the characters had to take a leap of faith to reach a helicopter. In addition there are scenes where the men would be drinking alcohol as it would be a commonly used beverage with a majority of adults in films.
